As a Catholic I am sure you will be very proud of the day that your child attends and participates in his or her first communion holy day. This day commemorates and celebrates the fact that your child now knows the true meaning of your family’s cherished religious faith, and is a milestone for them on their way to adulthood in this world which offers so few natural milestones without faith to help us along.
For the day of a first communion, it is customary to hold a gathering, get-together or party to celebrate your child’s special day and to welcome them officially into the church community. It is a day of fun and enjoyment, usually held close to the church perhaps in an adjoining hall or else in the home of the family whose child has received their first communion today. Or for all the children who participated in this ceremony on a given day.
Many parents and church families like to decorate the area of the first communion celebration party with appropriate decorations. Some churches will use balloons and streamers, often that the children in Sunday school have made, and some churches will be more formal and have flowers, tables set and a more formal lunch or afternoon tea gathering with all the members of the church community invited.
A lovely addition to the celebration area, whether it is formal or informal, are chocolate roses. If you are unable to source these through your usual church needs supplier, you may have easy luck sourcing them online if you look for wedding chocolate roses, a similar train of thought. Chocolate roses look very fine and elegant, and will be lovely enough for the adults to have on the tables, and yet still keep the children entertained with the novelty of being able to eat these sweet treats after the ceremony is over. Each child could even be given a chocolate rose along with the customary bible, prayer necklace or prayer journal, or other sacramental item that is most often given for a First Holy Communion.
